During several centuries the fes was a national symbol of the Ottoman Empire, a widespread headdress which came from Turkey to the Balkans, Near East and Northern Africa. After Kemal Ataturk said that the fes should be taken out together with the head, Turk men quickly changed it for a European hat, but in rural areas it can still be seen. Turkey, 20th cent.
