The antique schlappe from Switzerland

During a weekend stroll along the streets of the Alpine town of Appenzell in Switzerland we were lucky to discover and, after a short but unsuccessful bargain, to purchase this unique exhibit for The World of Hat. This woman's hat (called here Die Schlappe) belongs to the traditional costume of the Appenzell region and is actually a combination of a small balck cap with earflaps and huge lace "wings" from each side up to 30 cm high. The back of this headdress is usually ornated by a red bow.

The item dates back to the late 19th cent. and will inevitably become a centerpiece of our collection very soon.
