The Fulani are a cattle-breeding people of Atlantic origin, common during migrations across West Africa can be found in the vast area from Senegal to Nigeria. In the 19th century the state of Fula was very powerful and influential, having conquered many other nations in the region and that is reflected in their culture. In particular, the famous tenngade hat of the Fulani shepherds is made of cowhide on the frame of woven straw, it is worn in rural areas in Mali and Burkina Faso; pictured below are the Dogon elders, who in their language call the hat bambula or bampra. The only decoration on the hat is an elegant ribbon or nodules of leather.
