The population of the Minanga or Minangkabau people living in the central Malaysia and western part of Indonesian island of Sumatra is about 5 million people. They strictly adhere to Muslim rites, but in everyday life they have preserved the animistic beliefs and ancient clothing. The hornlike headdress of red or bright yellow color, which the Minangkabau women don with festive costumes, is to symbolize the two horns of their buffalo totem.
