Today sombrero is usually associated with Mexican peasants and Latin America. However, wide-brimmed straw hat was brought to America by the Spaniards, whose homeland, too, had some hot days, on which a light hat with large brims would protect against the sun. Even today, in villages throughout the Iberian Peninsula, you can find samples of the Spanish and Portuguese traditional low-crowned hat, and in Catalonia was born a high-top version of the hat.
