In Maramures, a small area in the northern part of Romania, the national costumes are still worn every day, especially by the older ladies who would not leave the house without the traditional black knee-long skirts and highly ornamented scarves. Male costume consists of a white shirt with baggy sleeves, black sheep vest and a must-have straw hat with narrow bent downward brims. The hat is worn on top of the head. Tassels and ribbons may vary in every village; the one that I am wearing (photo), has the patterns of the village of Ieud, where in an old trunk in the farmhouse I found it. Romania, Maramures.
