Headdress of the ethnic meadow Mari, worn only by married women. Ethnographers note association of the name with the headdresses’ names of other peoples of the Volga and Urals region: hushpu of the Chuvash, kashpo of the Besermyan, and kashman of the Bashkirs. The sample in my collection pertains to the beginning of the 19th century, but its owners went on with attaching coins to it later as well: careful examination revealed fifteen kopecks and twenty kopeks circa 1811 to 1916. In addition, it features round mirrors attached to the top of the oshpu in a light metal frame.
