Since 1832, when the famous toreador Francisco "Pakiro” Montes put on Montera, this black hat replaced Tricorne as the primary headgear of the Spanish matadors, but previously it was part of the traditional costume of the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, both men and women. The Montera is made of astrakhan fur with velvet lining inside. Today matador's Montera consists of three hemispheres of soft astrakhan fur on a rigid base. Spain, Barselona, 20th cent.
