"Just a malgay", that’s what the Mongols called this hat for me to distinguish it from various other types of malgays. Actually, malgay is a classic Treukh, a felt winter hat with a low, tightly fitting head crown, semicircular flaps and the similarly-shaped flap in the rear protecting the back of the neck. By the texture of the fabric and artistic patterns of the flaps, the malgay is inevitably going to remind of the Kalpaki, the hats worn by nomads in Central Asia, where most likely it was originated. Unlike other types of men's hats in Mongolia, which are considered festive or ceremonial, and sometimes just a souvenir, the malgay are worn everywhere today. Mongolia.
