Koruna

Country:
Russia
Nation:
Russians
Female

The Northern version of the maiden dressings common all over Russia is most luxurious. Cardboard base, inside lining of cotton clothe, three pieces of brocade fabric outside.  At the height the koruna reached 40 centimeters; it was stitched behind and looked like an upwardly divergent truncated cone. Usually it was richly decorated with pendants, as in the photo of the Pinega peasants below, but it could be worn without pendants as well; you can see this headdress in the picture of I.P.Argunov (1784). Another name for the koruna is the golovodets. Russia, Arkhangelsk, Pinega, 19th cent.
