Kapor

Country:
Russia, Samara
Nation:
Russians
Female

A very common headdress of urban women all over Russia since the early 19th century. It originates from a cap, worn by maids in Europe. In Russia the kapor /hood/ becomes fashionable along with the victorious return of troops under command of Kutuzov, gradually gained the favor of the high society ladies,  and remains popular until the end of the century. The kapor’s crown is tall (hair placed on the back of the head) and wide rigid brims framing face, narrowing to the back of the head. On the head the kapor was held with mantonierres - wide ribbons tied under the chin to form a bow. Russia, Samara, 19th cent.
