Helmet

Country:
Jordan
Nation:
Arab Bedouins
Female

This helmet-type headdress with pendants and a piece of cloth sewn behind is common among the nomads of Central Asia - from Turkmenistan to Palestine (our exhibit was purchased in Jordan). Tribes of Turkomans, Turkmen, Uzbek, Qashqai and Arab Bedouins make such headgear for the brides to wear during the wedding ceremony (in Turkmenistan it is called khasaba); the richer the family, the more expensive jewelry should be on the helmet: huge lapis stones on the back, silver coins weighing a pound and a massive iron (sometimes silver) tip makes wearing of such a "veil” a real test for the bride.
