Headscarf

Country:
Greece (Thrace)
Nation:
Greeks
Female

The Greek bride’s costume is traditionally very glamorous and multi-layered and sometimes so heavy that the bride can hardly walk and can barely turn her head. However, this scarf, common in the district of Metaxades in Thrace (northeastern Greece), is relatively poor in ornaments. It features only roses of ribbons sewn on the frontal part. Also distinctive is the black border around the edges of both the scarf and the head adornments. The Thracian scarf is stitched twice, which gives it a triangular shape.
