The population of Pinyega is only 3 thousand people, but this small village has become one of the last sanctuaries of the traditional Russian costume; it remained in use here until the second half of the 20th century. In the villages of the Pinezhsky District the Pomor families still retain the old traditions, and the local headdresses have always been subject of great admiration of ethnographers. In this case we have a magnificent maiden’s bandage of the height approx. 25 cm, made of gold brocade. At the bottom on the cotton basis is laid foil to which the finest bead threads are sewn in the form of floral pattern. The bandage was made at least a hundred years ago, its preservation is truly excellent. Russia, Arkhangelsk, Pinega, 19th cent.
