Gorra de Montehermoso

Country:
Spain
Nation:
Spanish
Female

It is considered the most traditional headware of the region of Extremadura in western Spain. Some scientists date the gorra back to the Celtic epoch, but it is documented from the 19th century, when it was worn by both city ladies and peasants, protecting the head and neck from the sun. Three distinct types of the gorra are known, differing in colours and decorations: ones for an unmarried woman, a married lady and a widow. Certainly the most colourful is the girl’s one, all in red and decorated by a small mirror above the forehead. Spain, Extremadura, late 20th cent.
