The ethnic group of the Tampulma (or tammariba, as they call themselves) live in northern Togo, where they recently migrated from areas of Upper Volta. the slave trade that flourished here a half century ago, led to the emergence of this tradition of building fortress-houses from the banko that the Tampulma build today. here they Sleep in narrow cells on the roof, the first floor being guarded all night by one of the family members, although trading slaves in Togo have long been gone. Belligerence of the Tampulma is reflected in women’s duo hats of woven straw decorated with antelope horns, the totem of the people.
