The traditional headdress of the Dalmatians is called the Barrett or the tsrvenkapa (i.e. the red cap), and both men and women wear it all over the region of Dalmatia, Croatia. It is made of felt. In Istria, northern Croatia, and Slovenia one can come across the same cap, but instead of gold ornaments they use white cloth there. Married women often wear a white kerchief over the Barrett. To make sure it doesn’t drop off, the cap is pinned to the hair with bobby pins as it takes up too little space on the head. This one was accidentally discovered and purchased in one of the oldest shops in Dubrovnik. Croatia, Dubrovnik, 20th cent.
